The Screen Machine, Scotland's mobile cinema visits the Peninsulas to show a screening of 1917

In the Spring of 1917, as the First World War rages on, the German Army is in retreat in northern France. But it’s soon revealed they’ve simply fortified their position to lure in and slaughter British forces. With telephone lines cut, two young soldiers are tasked with warning a British battalion of the trap. They’re against the clock to navigate No Man’s Land and dangerous enemy territory to save the lives of 1600 soldiers, including one of their own brothers.

Shot as one continuous take, this film places you in the chaotic horror and confusion of the Western Front as these two young men try to survive and complete their mission. It’s a shocking and unusual world where death could come at any second, and yet offers glimpses of sympathy and humanity.

“an amazingly audacious film; as exciting as a heist movie, disturbing as a sci-fi nightmare” Guardian *****
“an astonishing piece of filmmaking, portraying war with enormous panache.” Empire
“a suspense-filled race through the hell of war” Vanity Fair
